ABOUT ITCHY EYES

Itchy Eyes: Overview

Itchy eyes are a symptom of eye allergies (allergic conjunctivitis). There are two common types of allergic conjunctivitis.

Seasonal allergic conjunctivitis typically causes itchy eyes during the spring and fall. It's usually due to exposure to allergens such as grass, tree and weed pollen.

Perennial allergic conjunctivitis can cause itchy eyes that persist throughout the year. It's usually caused by exposure to household allergens such as mold, dust, animal hair and pet dander.

Itchy Eyes: Causes

When the surface of the eye is exposed to allergens like pollens, dust or pet dander, an allergic reaction can occur. This allergic reaction triggers the release of histamines, causing itchy, red or watery eyes.

Preventing Itchy Eyes

You can prevent itchy eyes at home and outdoors with these helpful tips.

Preventing itchy eyes at home:
Vacuum regularly to reduce indoor allergens such as dust and pet dander
Shut windows to keep out seasonal allergens
Air-conditioning helps to filter out allergens—clean filters and air ducts regularly
Keep pets out of bedrooms if pet dander or animal hair is a problem

Preventing itchy eyes outdoors:
Check the pollen count before going outside—pollen counts are highest between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m.
Don't hang laundry outside to dry because allergens stick to fabric
Take precautions before doing yard work—wearing a simple respirator will help filter out allergens while mowing the lawn, raking leaves or gardening
Shower after being outdoors to wash away allergens that may have collected in your hair

Rubbing Itchy Eyes

It's tempting to rub your eyes to make them feel better. But rubbing only releases more histamines that make your itchy eyes worse. In addition, rubbing may cause trauma to the eye surface and eyelid.

Itchy Eyes: Treatment

There are many treatments for itchy eyes that are available with a prescription or over-the-counter (OTC).

Zaditor is the first OTC eye drop that relieves itchy eyes for up to 12 hours with just one drop. So there's no need to re-dose or carry eye drops around all-day. Most OTC itchy eye treatments only provide 4-6 hours of relief before another dose is needed.

Unlike most OTC eye allergy treatments, Zaditor antihistamine eye drops do not contain a vasoconstrictor. Vasoconstrictors (decongestants) reduce the redness in the eye by narrowing the blood vessels in a process known as "vasoconstriction." With overuse, vasoconstrictors can cause rebound redness, leaving eyes red for a period of time after discontinuation. Zaditor treats itchy eyes without a vasoconstrictor, so rebound redness is not a concern.

Even little ones with itchy eyes can get all-day relief from just one drop, because Zaditor is proven safe and effective for children 3 years of age and older.*
